Just how bad does a horror film have to be before it becomes insufferable? That's the question I posed to myself while watching Sinister, a 2012 American supernatural horror film. The plot follows an author who moves his family into a house in order to write what would soon become the next best seller because of its horrific past. The family is tormented by malevolent spirits and soon start dying one by one, eventually leaving only the author and his daughter alive. Sinister has been met with generally unfavorable reviews from critics, but is worth mentioning as it has gained cult status as such. The film is directed, produced and written by Scott Derrickson, a director whose films have been met with critical acclaim before. Sinister is a movie tailor-made for someone who doesn't mind the slow burning tension that comes from a good horror movie. It's no mistake that Sinister received a PG-13 rating as opposed to an R rating because this film requires patience from its viewers to fully invest in the plot. The first 20 minutes of the film are pretty much just establishing the characters and setting up for all hell to break loose during the third act. In addition to being quite slow, Sinister also has some of the most tedious dialogue I've ever had to sit through. It's not so much the dialogue itself that's the problem, but more so the fact that it's just so cliché and boring. The characters talk and think in such a predictable manner that it feels like I'm watching a black and white sitcom from the 1960s. The universe of Sinister is also quite underdeveloped, leaving very little for you to discover on your own. If you're hoping to get lost in the world of Sinister, don't bother. You will only be disappointed because there's hardly anything for you to discover other than the obvious. The film is also quite slow paced, but it makes up for this with its uniquely creepy atmosphere and moody cinematography, both of which are well handled. It's really just a big atmosphere piece filled to the brim with very uninteresting human characters that do little more than walk around slowly while conversing with each other in boring monologues. Despite its shortcomings, Sinister somehow manages to rise above them by giving us an unsettling ghost story that is well-acted and shot. The movie is also very well-designed around its themes of evilution, dark secrets and forbidden gods. It's an interesting take on the supernatural that you can't help but be really absorbed by because it has so much potential to go somewhere interesting. It just needs a little more work for it to live up to its potential.
